HAUNTED

HAUNTED: An Appalachian Tarot Deck

Inspired by Appalachian folklore and urban legends from Southwestern PA, West Virginia, and Eastern Ohio, HAUNTED is a blend of history and horror in one 78-card tarot deck with an accompanying 94-page guide that includes both card meanings and legends.

After creating a few non-region-specific decks, I returned home with HAUNTED. This deck's scope expanded beyond the boundaries I kept in  Bridge Witches, (which focused the City of Pittsburgh and its surrounding metro area). I wanted to include more dark history and lore from the entire region.

This deck was funded via Kickstarter, and backers also received two maps with their deck. One was a hand-screen-printed map on hand-dyed cloth repurposed from deadstock, and the other was a paper printed copy of a hand-drawn map showcasing the locations of every legend found in the deck.

BRIDGE WITCHES

Volumes 1, 2, & 3 between 2016–2019

Self-published, out of print

Bridge Witches: A Tarot Deck is an illustration project that started everything for me. It was born from conversations with Pittsburghers about their lives in the Steel City. Each suit represents a cardinal direction, exploring that region (e.g., Fences are the Sword suit and illustrate scenes from the North Side and North Hills). Suits are Cups, Cicadas (Coins), Fences (Swords), and Trees (Wands)

I created this deck after years of working for a local human services organization. This organization served unhoused individuals, many living with mental illness during the Great Recession and the fallout of the Opioid Crisis. During that time, I started as an administrative assistant and worked my way up to community organizing, and briefly managing a food pantry. This work opened my eyes to a part of Pittsburgh that many people don't see or try to understand.

In 2016 I was inspired to use tarot as a storytelling mechanism, which I continue to do to this today.

After completing Volume 1 in 2016 (a very limited print run of 100 decks), I still had so many stories to tell. I knew I'd want to swap out cards for new ones illustrating different narratives. Volume 2 featured various replacement cards and came with a physical guidebook. Volume 3 saw the Cicada (Coins/Pentacles) cards replaced with a new set exploring Pittsburgh's gig economy. Neither of these was a complete remaster of Bridge Witches, but they showcased my progression in mastering digital illustration, including a move to Procreate instead of Adobe Photoshop.

A complete remaster for Bridge Witches Volume 4 is currently in the works.

Portraits

Illustrations are hand drawn, beginning in a sketchbook and finished on an iPad Pro in Procreate. AI is never used in my artwork.

My art practice has centered on perfecting my figure drawing craft since I was 15 years old. Twenty-five years later and I’m still discovering new things in every drawing. Figure drawing is both intricate and emotional. Every face and form is a new puzzle that I want to put together.

Over the past decade, since starting to illustrate tarot and occult themed work, my figure practice has spawned a unique specialization: transforming my portrait clients into macabre creatures. It started when a woman approached me to transform her into an ogre princess and it’s continued to include zombies, witches, and vampires. I love making beautiful figures from what is traditionally considered “creepy” or ugly." Rotting flesh or skin rashes become glowing and ethereal ornamentations.

Lately I’ve explored our relationship with the Earth by combining and transforming people into landscapes. I want to explore our old and blood soaked history with the soil —how people both destroy it and depend on it.
